The Veil Book Review

Reading is something I love and sharing this joy with my children is important to me. I sometimes get wild looks when I read young adult books, but I don’t let it stop me. The Veil, the first published book by Cory Putman Oakes, is my most recent young adult book indulgence.

Seventeen-year-old Addison Russell is in for a shock when she discovers that she can see the invisible world of the Annorasi. Suddenly, nothing is as it appears to be—the house she lives in, the woman who raised her, even the most beautiful boy in town all turn out to be more than what they seem. And when this strange new world forces Addy to answer for a crime that was committed long ago, by parents she has never known, she has no choice but to trust Luc, the mysterious Annorasi who has been sent to protect her. Or so he says . . .

From the beginning I found myself enjoying it. The Veil captures superpowers, parallel universes, and romance. A little bit of everything that comes up at my house every so often.

It was an easy read for me. I finished the 285 pages in a day.

Set in my favorite city, San Francisco, Ooakes takes the reader on into a world within a world.   I really loved that the book was set and referenced real places, including Ghirardelli Ice Cream and Chocolate Shop, The Palace of the Fine Arts and The Fairmont Hotel. The references made it easy for me to become part of the book and see the places in my mind.

While some it reminded me of Harry Potter and perhaps even a bit of Twilight, the book does well standing on it’s own. The book created a fantasy world of the mystical Annorasi whose powers include invisibility and flying. I like urban fantasy and really enjoyed the adventure.

I liked the main character, Addy. She was strong and Oakes made her believable in how she handled situations.

Overall, a very good book that I enjoyed and I believe young adults will find to be a great read as well.

The Veil, by Cory Putman Oakes, is available in paperback and Kindle, Nook, and iBooks e-book formats. It is a Young Adult Urban Fantasy, suitable for ages 13-up/Grades 7-up.
